Interior
The minimalist aesthetic 86 cabin features plastics durably molded in simple lines contrasted by carbon accents. The gauge cluster is front and center for the driver. Room up front is good, the trunk is large, and overall cargo space is not bad at all for a 2+2 coupe. Four people fit well in the 86, the trunk accommodates medium-sized bags easily, and the rear seats fold flat to open up more space. Front seats are roomy and comfortable with bolstering for extra support during spirited driving. Head and leg room accommodate drivers over six feet tall with ease and comfort. The plain interior may not have many moving parts, but everything feels solid, substantial, and utilitarian. Exterior
The 2017 Toyota 86 is as sleek as sports cars should be, inspired by classic design but also a modern car with touches of current styling. The 86 has the traditional long hood/short deck proportions that define sports cars with some styling departures most apparent up front. The wide, complex grille assumes an organic character accentuated by the bumper and light-emitting diode (LED) headlights and turn signals. Front fenders flare slightly upward from the hood line. Powertrain
Power is from a four-cylinder, horizontally mounted, 2,000-cubic centimeter, 205-horsepower engine. Hardly a torque monster at low engine revolutions, but run it up toward its redline, and the engine delivers more than enough power. The original engine is a Subaru design upgraded by Toyota injection systems. Raw power never has been their main objective. The engine sits low and rearward, linked to either a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic driving the rear wheels. Maximum torque kicks in high in the rev range, so the engine really has to wind up for optimal high-speed performance. The 86 is less about speed in the straightaway than about its ability to handle bends, twists, and sharp turns in the road.
