Last year's Tundra made a tow hitch standard on all models. That's a plus for those who tow. There was a TRD Pro edition, but that has been dropped in favor of the road-going TRD Sport. This edition sports a honeycomb grille. The hood scoop, grille surround, bumpers and mirrors are body colored. Bedside graphics and 20-inch chrome wheels polish off the look. A new grille has been added to the 2019 SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum and 1794 editions. The headlights are different too, and more editions have LEDs. For both 2017 and 2018, beds come in 5.5-, 6.5- and 8.1-foot configurations. Ground clearance is a class-leading 10.6 inches. New for 2018, the high beams are self-regulating. They can change the light to suit oncoming traffic and then maximize it to help drivers. Three editions now offer a sunroof, and Toyota is the only truck dealer with a power rear window that can roll down completely. With these two features, truck drivers can experience an open air ride. The 2017 offered the one-row cabin, but it has been discontinued with the 2018 edition. This pleases shoppers who prefer the Double Cab and the Crew Max. With the seats folded, it offers the biggest cargo hold in its class, according to testing by Car and Driver magazine. Power-adjusting front seats are available with heat and ventilation controls. The cockpit has been updated with a new gauge cluster design. Drivers will appreciate the larger 4.2-inch information display screen.

Toyota has positioned it between the speedometer and tachometer. A new matte-finish wood-styled trim has been added to the Limited cabin. The TRD Sport has trim-specific floor mats and shifter. Navigation and additional speakers are added to the Limited. A 12-speaker JBL audio system is standard on Platinum and 1794 models.

Toyota has V8 engines which have proved powerful enough to continue for 2018. The 4.6-liter V8 can handle a tow rated at 6800 pounds. The 5.7-liter V8 can boost that rate to a 8800 pounds or higher with a top rate of 10,700 pounds. Tundra drivers command 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of torque on entry level models. However, the optional powertrain boosts that to 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum payload is 2,090 with the right cab/bed configuration and the V8 engine. TRD Sport models are destined for the open road. These adventure seekers have Bilstein shocks and TRD-specific front/rear anti-roll bars.

The 2017 Toyota Tundra has eight airbags, the highest airbag count in the light duty class. They also have an electronic limited slip differential as well as extensive traction and stability controls. For 2018, Toyota has added Safety Sense P. These standard features provide help to busy drivers. A lane watch will alert you if the truck strays from the lines. A lane assist will intervene to help straighten up the truck. A forward collision warning sounds an alarm if the cars ahead are stopping fast. If the driver doesn't respond fast enough, it will hit the brakes to mitigate the accident.
